Is Tesla CEO Elon Musk considering opening up his company’s patents to help speed up EV development?

In speaking with the BBC, Musk hinted that he’s considering “freeing” up Tesla’s patents in hopes of breaking down technological barriers and speeding up electric car adoption. Naturally, such a move would be controversial but Musk hinted earlier during a shareholders meeting that the company is “playing with doing something fairly significant on this front.”

In a way, it would be awkward if there were charging stations that were specific to automakers in the future, especially when electric vehicles become more common. “We don’t want to cut a path through the jungle and then lay a bunch of landmines behind us,” said Musk.
